ChatGPT image ads: OpenAI puts ads beside generated pictures - with no price yet

OpenAI will test a visual ad format inside ChatGPT image generation later this month, US only, for Free and Go users. It also expanded ad measurement and brand safety tools. The price, targeting and a Canadian date were not published. Here is what business owners should watch.

OpenAI will start testing labeled visual ads that appear while ChatGPT generates an image, beginning later this month in the US with an initial group of advertisers, and it has not said what they cost.

What to know
  1. OpenAI is testing a visual ad format that shows up while ChatGPT generates an image.
  2. The test starts later this month in the US, with an initial group of advertisers and users on the Free and Go plans.
  3. OpenAI says the ads are labeled, separate from the image, and do not influence ChatGPT's answers.
  4. ChatGPT Ads now connect to more tracking tools, including Triple Whale, AppsFlyer and LiveRamp.
  5. Pricing, targeting and any date outside the US have not been published.

OpenAI announced it on October 5, 2026, in a post on its own site titled "Building advertising for the way people use AI." The same day it was covered by Sarah Perez, TechCrunch's Consumer News Editor, and by Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable. Search Engine Journal also covered the announcement. Very few business owners will buy one of these ads this month. It still matters, because it shows ChatGPT, which OpenAI says reaches 1.2 billion people each week, turning into an ad platform with more than one kind of shelf space. The tools for proving whether those ads pay off are being built right now, before the new format reaches most advertisers.

OpenAI is placing ads exactly where people wait for images

OpenAI's own post says the new visual ad format "helps people imagine how products and services could fit into their lives," using images that show product inspiration, product usage, or the experiences a product makes possible. The first test runs during image generation in ChatGPT, for users on the Free and Go plans, according to OpenAI. OpenAI does not mention any other plan in connection with the test.

Search Engine Roundtable described the screenshot OpenAI shared: the requested image is being generated at the top, the progress reads 62% done, and an ad sits below it, already loaded and waiting for a click. Think of it like the screen on a gas pump that plays an ad while your tank fills: the placement works because you are standing there waiting anyway. OpenAI says the ads will be clearly labeled, will remain separate from the image being created, and that, as with its other formats, advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.

This is a new location for advertising inside the product. Search Engine Journal points out that until now ChatGPT Ads have appeared below responses in the chat itself. Its reasoning is that people use ChatGPT in different ways, some asking questions or researching purchases and others creating images or working with files, and bringing ads into image generation opens advertising to more of those uses.

The test is small, American and starts later this month

All three publications agree on the scope. Testing begins later this month in the US with an initial group of advertisers, OpenAI says. TechCrunch adds the history: OpenAI introduced ads earlier this year to support its free and low-cost subscription tiers and expanded them to India in August. TechCrunch also notes that the move follows the launch of Meta's Muse, an agentic AI app that is free to everyone and a growing competitor to leading chatbots like ChatGPT.

None of the sources says when, or whether, the visual format will reach Canada, and Search Engine Journal reports that OpenAI has given no timeline for a broader rollout. TechCrunch describes the long-term aim as letting advertisers reach ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users once the ads roll out globally, but that is a destination, not a date.

Separately from the test, OpenAI's post ends by saying businesses can sign up today for ads at ads.openai.com. That sign-up is for ChatGPT Ads in general. The visual format itself is limited, for now, to the initial test group.

The quieter change is better measurement for ChatGPT ads overall

For most advertisers, the measurement news is more useful than the new format, because it applies to ChatGPT Ads broadly. OpenAI says integrations with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp make it easier to send conversion data from an advertiser's existing systems to ChatGPT Ads. It now supports attribution partners including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin, covering Conversions API, reporting and click attribution, plus full-funnel and advanced measurement partners Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL.

In plain terms, a conversion is the thing you actually want: a booking, a sale, a quote request. OpenAI says the goal is to help advertisers understand how ChatGPT Ads contribute to their business "using the systems they already rely on." If the tool you already use to track where customers come from is on that list, a ChatGPT ad can be judged in your own reports rather than only in OpenAI's numbers.

OpenAI is also testing incrementality, which asks a harder question: would that sale have happened without the ad? It says it is partnering with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic to explore geo-based experiments, which Search Engine Journal describes as designed to measure whether ChatGPT Ads caused additional business results. OpenAI calls this work "still in its early stages."

OpenAI's early results are real numbers but not benchmarks

OpenAI shared three early partner findings. According to DV Rockerbox, WeightWatchers' attributed cost per acquisition on ChatGPT Ads was 15.3% lower than its blended paid-search benchmark. WorkMagic reported statistically significant lift for wellness brand Dose, with 67% of incremental purchases coming from net-new customers. And according to Triple Whale, 93% of Portland Leather's visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new.

Search Engine Journal warns that those figures measure different outcomes, so advertisers should not read them as broader ChatGPT Ads benchmarks. They also come from three brands, presented by OpenAI in its own announcement. A lower cost per acquisition for a national weight-loss brand tells a neighbourhood clinic or a roofing company very little about what its own leads would cost.

Brand safety tools arrive before most brands do

OpenAI says its placement guardrails assess whether a conversation is appropriate for advertising, to keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable contexts, backed by automated review, human oversight and ongoing monitoring. For narrow requirements tied to a brand's own policies, Negative Phrases are now available to qualifying advertisers.

OpenAI is also developing brand suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science, which it says lets those independent firms assess how its standards are applied in a controlled testing environment without accessing private user conversations. Lidiane Jones, CEO of Integral Ad Science, said in OpenAI's post that marketers "need confidence that brand safety protections are durable, consistent, and built to operate at scale." Mark Zagorski, CEO of DoubleVerify, called ChatGPT "a fundamentally different advertising environment, where context is defined by the conversation itself rather than a page or video."

That last point deserves a business owner's attention. On a website, you can look at the page your ad ran next to. In ChatGPT, the setting is a private conversation you will never see, so advertisers depend on the platform's guardrails and on outside checks like these to know where their name showed up.

Price and targeting are missing from the announcement

The other side: OpenAI has not published the price of the visual format, and Search Engine Journal reports it has not shared details about targeting, creative requirements or reporting either, because only a select group of advertisers is involved so far. TechCrunch raises a user-side worry: ads like these could prove disruptive to the experience, and Sarah Perez suggests that may be partly the point, since the ads could push more casual users to pay for a subscription to avoid them. Search Engine Journal flags a different concern: an image ad appearing while someone generates an image could feel more native than a sponsored placement under a text answer, so how much separation OpenAI keeps between the two is worth watching once the test begins. The sources also do not say how the conversation guardrails apply to image requests specifically. And the incrementality work, by OpenAI's own description, is early.

Bottom line

This is a format to watch, not a line in this year's budget. Search Engine Journal puts it the same way, calling it "more of a format to watch than something advertisers need to plan around today." The visual ads are a US test with a starter group of advertisers, no published price, and no date for anywhere else. What changed for everyone is the scaffolding: ChatGPT Ads now plugs into more of the tracking tools businesses already use, and OpenAI is inviting outside firms to check its brand safety.

If you sell something that looks good in a picture, such as a finished kitchen, a pair of boots or a brighter smile, this is the kind of ad shelf built for showing it, if and when it opens up. If you are curious enough to sign up for ChatGPT Ads now, first make sure you can measure a ChatGPT lead in the same place you measure the rest. The real test, as Search Engine Journal frames it, is whether these ads reach people you were not already reaching elsewhere. When ChatGPT finally shows you a price, will you know what a new customer is worth to you?

For business owners

What this means for your business

Nothing to buy yet for most owners: the visual format is a US test with an initial group of advertisers, and OpenAI has not published pricing, targeting or creative rules. If you sell products or results that look good in pictures, such as furniture, apparel or renovations, watch for the format to open more widely, for a published price, and for any mention of Canada. If you plan to try ChatGPT Ads through ads.openai.com, check first whether the attribution tool you already use is on OpenAI's partner list so you can judge results in your own reports.
