Your real customer questions, put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, every week. Every answer stored.
8ight does generative engine optimization (GEO): we track what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity answer to your customers' questions, find where you are missing and who is named instead, and publish the pages that answer those questions. On Premium+ you also get the sources the assistants cite instead of you, as a checklist.
Search did not move to a new website. It moved into an answer. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity now answer many "who should I call" questions before anyone reaches a list of links. New to the term? Read what GEO is, or how GEO, SEO and AEO differ.
See what it costs →Between 1 July and 29 August 2026 we put the same questions to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, over and over, and kept every answer: the wording, whether the business was named, and every source the engine cited.
| Engine | Answers recorded | Business named | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 1,171 | 43 | 3.7% |
| Claude | 1,168 | 43 | 3.7% |
| Gemini | 1,171 | 35 | 3.0% |
Sample: 60 questions across 5 local service businesses. That is a narrow sample and we would rather say so than round it into something it is not. The citation data below covers 2,698 answers and 1,211 separate sources, which is where the useful part is.
Every answer that carried a source, counted. Directories dominate, which is what most people expect. What most people do not expect is the second column.
| Source | Share of cited answers |
|---|---|
| Yelp (.com + .ca) | 21.6% |
| One individual business's own website | 10.1% |
| Fresha | 8.6% |
| HomeStars | 6.2% |
| Angi | 4.0% |
| HomeGuide | 3.3% |
The most-cited source after Yelp was not a platform at all. It was one company's own website, quoted in 10.1% of answers that carried a citation - ahead of HomeStars, Angi and HomeGuide. Being outranked by directories is not a law of physics. One business had already beaten them.
Google's own grounding wrapper (vertexaisearch.cloud.google.com) is excluded - it is how Gemini passes a source through, not a source. Individual business websites are described but not named: several are customers, and we are not publishing who we track.
The measurement is the start, not the product. Every week we ask the engines the questions your customers ask, record who gets named, and turn each miss into a specific piece of work.
Your real customer questions, put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, every week. Every answer stored.
Which questions you are missing from, and which sources the engines read instead of you.
The listing that keeps getting cited. The answer block your page is missing. The article nobody wrote.
Same questions, next run. You see the line move, or you see that it did not.
The work that decides whether an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity names your business when a customer asks it a question. It is measured question by question, and changed by publishing pages that answer those questions directly and by being present on the sources the assistants cite. There is a longer explanation in what GEO actually means.
They overlap. AEO (answer engine optimization) aims at the single answer a search engine lifts from a page, such as a featured snippet; GEO aims at the answer an AI assistant writes in its own words. We treat them as one job. See GEO vs SEO vs AEO.
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. We do not track Google AI Overviews.
No, and nobody honestly can. The answers are generated fresh and change as the assistants change. We track the questions, record every answer and publish the work aimed at the ones where you are missing, so you can see whether the answer moves.
Yes. Agencies can resell the whole thing under their own brand: see white-label GEO.
We will run your questions and send you the answers - the real wording, and who got named instead of you. Or see for yourself first, free: the AI visibility check asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude who the best business in your trade and city is.
