How an AI Assistant Actually Picks Which Business to Name

Not a ranking, not an auction. A retrieval step and a confidence judgement — and understanding the difference changes what you should work on.

Published, not just written

New articles every week, published automatically to your own site. How many depends on the plan.

Run on our own businesses too

The same engine publishes every week for businesses we own, so we live with its output the way our clients do.

Retrieval comes before anything else

Before an assistant can consider you, it has to find you in whatever sources it is drawing on. If your business is thinly described, inconsistently listed, or absent from the kinds of pages that get used as sources, the question of whether it likes you never comes up. Most businesses lose here rather than at the judgement stage.

Then it has to be confident enough to state it

An assistant naming a business is asserting something. That pushes it toward sources it can corroborate — where the name, address, services and hours agree across several places. Contradiction is not neutral; it actively suppresses you, because the safest response to conflicting information is to name somebody else.

What you can influence, in order

Consistency first, because it is the cheapest and it gates everything. Then clarity — pages that say plainly what you do, where, and for whom, with the answer near the top. Then coverage — actually having a page about the thing being asked about. None of that is a trick, which is why it keeps working as the systems change.

What you cannot influence

Which model the person used, how the question was phrased, what the system happened to retrieve that day, and whether it names three businesses or none. This is why nobody can sell you a position in an AI answer, and why anyone offering one is describing something they do not control.

Where 8ight fits. Everything above is work that has to happen continuously. We automate the publishing half: three to six articles a week onto your own site, built to rank and carrying everything Google rewards. You can read what published today before you spend anything.

Questions

Can I check whether it is working?

Ask the assistants yourself, regularly, phrasing the question the way a customer would. It is crude and inconsistent, and it is the honest measure available today.

Do different assistants behave differently?

Yes, substantially, and they change without notice. That is an argument for fundamentals rather than for optimising to one system’s current behaviour.

Does being cited bring traffic?

Sometimes less than you would hope — the answer may satisfy the person entirely. Being the business named is still worth it, because the call is the point rather than the click.

What it costs

Pricing is tailored to the business. The plans differ by publishing volume and how much of the AI-search work is included; book a demo and we scope it with you, or start free with 3,000 credits, no card.
